Seiko is eking out two big anniversaries for the price of one with 2021 used to celebrate 140 years since founder Kintaro Hattori opened a watch shop in Ginza and 2023 marking 110 years since he produced his first wristwatches.
Among the first of what we will call Seiko’s 110th anniversary watches has been unveiled today, a special edition Prospex diver’s watch with a frosted silvery-white dial framed by a grey and white bezel.
It aims to inspire thoughts of polar glaciers, and takes its design and architecture from watches used during Polar expeditions in 1960s and ‘70s.
Its case is based on the elliptical Seiko 6105-8000 diver’s watch from 1968, and has its crown at 4 o’clock, like the historical timepiece.
It is sold on a five-row steel bracelet with an additional patterned grey strap made entirely of recycled plastic bottles.
The 41mm stainless steel watch is powered by Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R35, which has a power reserve of 70 hours.
It is a limited edition of 5,000 pieces, which go on sale in January for £1,140.
Seiko has made it part of its Save the Ocean series of Prospex watches that contribute funds and awareness to marine charities.
