Raketa celebrates 65th anniversary of Sputnik-1 with a special edition watch

Russian watch brand Raketa has launched a new timepiece to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Sputnik-1, the first artificial Earth satellite that sparked the space age.

Russian watch brand Raketa has launched a new timepiece to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Sputnik-1, the first artificial Earth satellite that sparked the space age.

The Raketa “Sputnik-1” watch features a dial inspired by the iconic metal sphere with four long antennas that orbited the Earth 1,440 times in 1957.

The watch also pays tribute to the brand’s heritage as one of the oldest watch factories in Russia, founded in 1721 by Peter the Great.

Raketa was renamed in 1961 after Yuri Gagarin’s historic space flight on board a Vostok rocket, as “Raketa” means “space-rocket” in Russian.

On the release, Raketa’s CEO, Jacques von Polier, said: “We are very proud to celebrate this milestone of human history with our new watch.

“Sputnik-1 was not only a scientific achievement, but also a symbol of peace and unity that brought people together across continents and cultures. We hope that our watch will inspire people to dream big and reach for the stars.”

The Raketa “Sputnik-1”is powered by a mechanical movement made in-house at the Raketa Watch Factory in Saint Petersburg. It boasts a power reserve of 40 hours and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour.

Meanwhile, the case is made of stainless steel and measures 40 mm in diameter and offers a water resistance to 50 meters.

Coming with a leather strap, the Raketa “Sputnik-1” watch is limited to 300 pieces and retails for €990.

It is available on Raketa’s official website and selected retailers worldwide.
