Seiko revives go-anywhere 5 Sports automatics line for 2019

Seiko has unveiled a fresh Seiko 5 Sports collection 51 years after it first appeared in 1968.

It was Seiko’s and Japan’s first ever automatic day-date watch.

The number 5 was used at the time to highlight five key attributes of the collection: an automatic movement, a day-date display at the three o’clock position, water resistance, a recessed crown at the four o’clock position and a case and bracelet built for durability.

The new Seiko 5 Sports collection, which goes on sale in September, aims to capture the same values but in a fresh new look designed to appeal to today’s exploding market for all-day easy-wearing sports watches.

The first Seiko 5 watch, Seiko Sportmatic 5, was launched in 1968.

Seiko 5 Sports has been a pioneer in the boardroom to beach aesthetic, and has been marketed as a go-anywhere watch for decades.

The Fall/Winter 2019 Seiko 5 Sports has arrow-shaped minute hands, distinctive hour markers and a diver’s uni-directional rotating bezel.

They carry a brand new sporty logo that would not look out of place on a tennis racket or cricket bat.

The movements are all Seiko’sautomatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand.

There are 27 different executions, each in one of five styles: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense. All have new dials with three-dimensional hour markers and the collection embraces a wide range of straps and bracelets from steel mesh to silicone/leather hybrids.

Prices start at £250.

  1. This is great news and almost answers my prayers. What I want is a new Sports 150 gold face with day and date. Mine was circa late 1980s and ironised black. The best bit it was indestructible unless you tried to destroy it, has super accurate quartz that still keeps time today. But the ionised black rubs away so is looking tatty. But the watches you show just need a good quality metal strap and bingo, I can chose something. Robin
