Museum of Timekeeping puts on black polishing masterclass

Priced at £650, the two day masterclass will be held by Henrik Korpela FBHI, who co-founded the K&H Watchmaking Competence Centre in Switzerland.

Following the success of Horology 101 classes in London held by the Horological Society of New York, there is another opportunity for professionals and enthusiasts to advance watchmaking skills with a two day Black Polishing Masterclass taking place from October 21 to 22.

There are very few places remaining, but the course can be booked online at the Museum of Timekeeping website.

It is priced at £650 for the two day masterclass, which will be held by Henrik Korpela FBHI, who co-founded the K&H Watchmaking Competence Centre in Switzerland.

“This is an exciting event for watchmakers and clockmakers who want upgrade their hand-finishing skills. The tutor is a specialist in horological finishing, and is coming specially from Switzerland to deliver the Masterclass,” the organiser says.

Black polishing is a variation on traditional polishing where a component is polished to a perfectly even mirror-like finish. It is an extremely labor intensive process, usually reserved for only the finest of watches.

The two-day intensive course is being held this weekend in the workshops of Russell Talerman, just off Old Bond Street at 43-36 Maddox Street, London W1S 1PD.

All proceeds from the event will be split between the Museum of Timekeeping and the British Horological Institute.
