February watch sales leap by 42 percent in Britain

Sales across all categories in Britain were up by 42%, with the recovery strong across all price points, according to GfK.

February was another month of distorted comparisons to a year earlier, with the month blighted by a second lock down in 2021.

London and the rest of Great Britain have bounced back at a similar pace. Sales in February rose by 67%, year on year in London and by 54% outside the capital.

Average transaction values are still rising, up by 31.4% year on year in February.

With data fluctuating wildly depending on when the country was facing the hardest covid restrictions, it pays to look at annual trends.

For the past 12 months, total sales rose YoY by 42.3% from March 2021 to February 2022, thanks largely to average prices increasing by 38.4%.

The volume of watches sold was virtually flat for the full 12 months, nudging up by just 2.8%.

Online sales have been the most volatile, rising strongly through most of 2020 and up until the summer of 2021, but that growth has gone into reverse since June last year.

For the full year from March 2021 to February 2022, online sales dipped by 5.7%.
