Ernest Jones and H. Samuel sales dip by 8.5% in first quarter

Same store sales were down despite rising average transaction values for the UK retail chains.

Sales at Ernest Jones and H. Samuel, which make up the International Sales division for US-based Signet Jewelers, fell by 8.5% in the three months to the end of April.

The fall is on a like-for-like basis on the same number of stores.

With new openings taken into account, sales were flat at $93 million for the quarter.

A report from the group on its Q1 2024 said that same store sales were down despite rising average transaction values.

Signet Jewelers is not alone in feeling the impact of economic headwinds, rising cost of living and falling household spending power.

In the most recent Watches of Switzerland quarterly results report, the group issued guidance that it expects a slight drop in sales for the quarter from May to July but a stronger second half as macro economic conditions improve in the United States and the UK.
