City centres continue to be depressed by Plan B advice

Footfall across all UK retail destinations remains 21.3% below the level this time three years ago in January 2019.

Footfall across all UK retail destinations remains 21.3% below the level this time three years ago in January 2019.

Despite the light tough covid restrictions, particularly in England, traffic remains depressed with high street footfall down 26.9%, shopping centres 26% quieter and retail parks almost back to normal with attendance just 4.2% lower.

Retail analyst Springboard reports footfall rising slightly, by 1.5% last week compared to the seven days prior.

Scotland and Wales, which are living with tougher covid measures than England, have performed worst with drops in footfall last week of 25.4% and 27.8% respectively in comparison to the same week in January 2019.

This compares to a fall of 18.7% in Greater London and 16.4% in the South East.

A lack of tourists and the current work from home advice is damaging city centres the most.

Central London remains the worst hit retail destination with 42% fewer shoppers than at the same point in 2019.
