Breitling’s Highland Fling

Superocean capsule collection gets a touch of "tweed".

Georges Kern can be a chameleon: one day relaxing with Hollywood royalty, the next togged-up as a top gun fighter pilot.

Now picture a country gent reclining in a wingback chair with a single malt scotch?

That’s the image marketeers might conjure-up of the Breitling CEO for the brand’s latest capsule collection, the Superocean Heritage ’57 Highland specials.

“We wanted to evoke a very specific feeling of walking in the Scottish Highlands,” says Mr Kern.

Warming to the analogy, he adds: “From the moment you set out in a tweed jacket and wool sweater, to a day spent roaming windswept cliffs, to that welcome return home to warm up by a crackling fire, dog at your side. The Highlands Capsule Collection is designed to be there every step of the way.”

The set of four 38mm watches come with beige, green, mustard and blue sunray dials.

Breitling has missed a trick in not working with a highland tweed specialist — the sort of authentic revival industry punters might expect the brand to get behind — opting instead for tweed-inspired fabric straps made from a blend of silk and wool.

They are actually sold on metal mesh bracelets — more Milanese than Mull of Kintyre — with complementary faux-tweed straps included in the package.

The steel watches have gold-rimmed ceramic bezels and powered by the Breitling Caliber 10 three-hand automatic movement with COSC-certified accuracy.

They are on sale for a limited time for £5,000.
