Picture the scene: an explosive device, exposed wires and a countdown timer ticking down to zero.
This is not just the stuff of Hollywood movies, it is reality for an elite team of US armed forces engineers known as the United States Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal.
Ball Watch Company is honouring the work of these steady-handed heroes with a brand new Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD, which will be revealed for the first time in the UK at WatchPro Salon.
This country’s premier luxury watch event takes place from November 10 to 11 at The Londoner hotel on Leicester Square.
Ball says the Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD is the most robust mechanical watch ever developed by the Swiss company.
The United States Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal was first created in 1941 to clear the battlefields of World War II and continues to operate in war zones all over the world.
The unit’s bomb-diffusing members adhere with a trace of gallows humour to the motto “Initial Success or Total Failure.”
Ball’s Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD is a 42mm titanium timepiece equipped with an advanced anti-shock system that will protect the watch’s movement if it is dropped off a 10 metre cliff.
It is also resistant to magnetic forces up to 1,000 Gauss.
Bomb squads may need to read the time in the dark, so the watch has glowing micro gas tubes for hour markers, hands and the 60 seconds of its countdown bezel.
If they find themselves dealing with underwater explosives, the watch will be protected up to 1,000 feet below sea level.
The watch is also accurate to COSC certification standard thanks to being powered by Ball’s RR1101-CSL automatic three-hand with date caliber.
It is sold on a steel and titanium bracelet for £3,230.
