Sardinia is hosting the latest round of Extreme E motor racing dubbed the Island X Prix this weekend and the event is being used as a launchpad for a second Extreme E special edition Defy chronograph that picks up the vivid orange and black combination used in the rally’s branding.
Zenith is the official timekeeper and founding partner of Extreme E.
It is based on the Defy Extreme Carbon and uses Zenith’s El Primero 9004 1/100th of a second automatic chronograph movement housed in a 45mm carbon and microblasted titanium case.
Extreme E was created to showcase how sustainable technology, materials and concepts can be used in modern motor racing.
Zenith is taking this mission into the creation of the 20-piece Defy Extreme E Special Edition, which has a rubber strap using recycled Continental CrossContact tires that were used in the first season’s races and comes in a watch case made from recycled and upcycled elements from the side-lines of the first season’s races.
The case’s lid coating is made from recycled E-grip tires, while the plate covering is made from parts of an Extreme E Season 1 racing tarpaulin.
The DEFY Extreme E Island X Prix is available at Zenith’s website and its own boutiques, priced at CHF 26,900.
