WatchPro Sports Watches of the Year Winner: Grand Seiko Spring Drive Sport Chronograph

Using the brand’s logo – a lion – as inspiration, the aggressively styled and robust 44.5mm titanium case projects strength and power, right down to the claw-like lugs.

Grand Seiko has been making quite a name for itself on the international stage since becoming a stand-alone brand in 2017.

Characterised by exceptional craftsmanship and an uncompromising approach to quality, the company has produced some of the nicest dress watches to issue forth from any brand in the last few years.

This year the Japanese watchmaker turned its attention to sports watches, introducing the limited edition Spring Drive Sport Chronograph complete with GMT function.

Using the brand’s logo – a lion – as inspiration, the aggressively styled and robust 44.5mm titanium case projects strength and power, right down to the claw-like lugs.

At the same time, it incorporates many of the classic hallmarks of a Grand Seiko timepiece. For example, Zaratsu polishing on the case and diamond-cut edges on the surfaces of the hands and hour markers.

Inside the case the in-house Calibre 9R96 brings together the precision and self-winding capacity of Seiko’s Spring Drive technology with a column-wheel chronograph and a GMT complication.

Perhaps most impressively, accuracy is rated at ±0.5 second per day.
