VIEREN watch review: The Black Croc reinvents the classic dress watch for today

They, whoever they are, say denim on denim is somewhat of a risky fashion choice.

Some will agree and some may not but we do know that leather on leather is a much less discussed topic of fashion.

When it comes to watches, leather on leather is an interesting proposition and in terms of a design, there is no one better placed than someone with a background in fashion to put it together – exactly what Sunny Fong has done with The Black Croc by VIEREN.

An automatic movement, the timepiece experiments with materials by extending black croc embossed leather from the strap onto the dial to what the brand says is an aim to reinvent the classic leather dress watch for today’s generation.

The ETA-2671 offers 44 hours of power reserve with hours, minutes and seconds hands functionality with date disc.

As well as reliable functionality, as will all VIEREN timepieces, the brand has secured a Swiss Made Certificate of Origin to be distributed with each watch, another feather in the cap and another tick in a box for watch lovers who want something different, while staying with the Swiss Made quality all too well known and loved.

Speaking of reliability, I had the utmost confidence with the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and multi-layered reflective coating that I could wear the VIEREN with confidence at any dinner or dress occasion.

But enough about the reliability and functionality, for VIEREN, all of that is a given. The real head turner for this watch is the leather strap and dial, made from premium black crocodile embossed calfskin from Italy and South America.

It complements the brand’s iconic rectangular watch case and monochromatic dial designs perfectly, something the founder of the brand Sunny Fong, who has a background in fashion design, will be delighted he has managed to achieve.

The ardillon buckle rounds off the piece perfectly and really accentuates the leather strap to give the entire piece a real vintage yet contemporary feel that would suit any dress occasion.

Limited to 100 pieces, the VIEREN Black Croc strikes the perfect balance between affordability for a truly luxurious timepiece that comes with a level of exclusivity too.
