Versace dives into summer with the Medusa Alchemy collection

House symbols unite in the Versacce Medusa Alchemy range of summer watches.

When Gianni Versace launched his fashion business in 1978, his house logo was his name in a simple bold font. However, by 1993 this modest branding had been replaced by the head of Medusa.

But why did he choose the demon gorgon from Greek mythology with live, venomous snakes in the place of hair? Apparently her fearsome and beguiling beauty was how he wanted his clothes to be seen – so seductive, powerful and demanding that no one would be able to look away.

A student of Baroque architecture, which he loved for its extravagance and opulence, Gianni passed the Milanese buildings that proudly displayed these dramatic designs, every day. Without a doubt, they were an over-arching influence on his own creations through their symbolism and colouring – the house of Versace even today favouring gold and vibrant reds, pinks, greens and blues.

Due to Medusa’s role as a guardian and protectress, her severed head was eventually given to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. And, despite the grisly side to her tale – especially for ophidiophobes – this role as beautiful defender makes her the ideal emblem of ‘girl power’.

The latest collection of watches from Versace reimagines the house’s beloved Medusa for Spring-Summer 2023. Transparent resin contributes to the mysterious fascination of the 3D Medusa head floating over the dial of the Medusa Alchemy range, offering a fresh twist on the La Medusa series.

Each watch in the collection boasts a specific colourway, transparent finishes, and brand hallmarks such as a 3D floating Medusa head and Greca design in a resin finish.

Shades of silver, gold, and an on-trend bicolour mash-up stand next to hues taken from Versace’s ready-to-wear collection such as black, blue, fuchsia and turquoise. The pieces are presented on a patent leather strap.

A Ronda two-hand quartz movement is housed inside the 38mm, round, stainless-steel case. Dial-side, a resin Medusa’s head appears to float over the face thanks to its position between two crystals.

The Medusa Alchemy range is available in Versace boutiques, at versace.com and from authorised dealers, priced at £1,270.
