As TAG Heuer celebrates the Monaco’s 55th anniversary, the watch has been propelled into haute horlogerie territory with the unveiling of the Split-Seconds Chronograph.
A split-seconds Monaco was trailed at One Watch last year, but this is the first time we have seen such a watch in TAG Heuer’s regular collection.
The company has more than a century of experience in making rattrapantes, with the Mikrograph, a chronograph with 1/100th second timing brought out way back in 1916 that began to make Heuer’s name as a pioneer of sports timers.
The new watch has a 41mm grade-5 titanium case and comes in two versions, one red and one blue. Julien Tornare, CEO of TAG Heuer, called the watch “the epitome of precision and innovation”, saying it is “a perfect fusion of tradition and cutting-edge technology, showcasing our expertise in watchmaking craftsmanship.”

There is also a new panda-dialled Carrera Chronograph, with the glassbox sapphire crystal covering both dial and bezel. It is a tri-compax design with the look of a bi-compax, as the running small seconds at 6 o’clock blends in with the silver dial, while the chrono counters stand out in contrasting azuré black. Celebrating its 60th anniversary last year, the Jack Heuer’s Carrera is going from strength to strength, and at just over 6k for an automatic chronograph with and in-house movement, it has got a good lead over the competition.

The Carrera is most associated with motor racing – notably the ferocious Carrera Panamericana it was named after – but another new model has a different sporting focus. Last year, we saw the 1960s, nautically inspired Skipper in steel and now TAG has unveiled a version in rose gold. Comes complete with seafaring colouring, including a red hand for the central chronograph seconds.

From different sports, to a Carrera that does not make you think of sports at all. TAG has also unveiled three new 36mm time-only Carreras with a distinctively feminine focus. Two versions have mother-of-pearl dials surrounded by a flange set with 76 diamonds, one fully steel, the other steel with a. gold bezel and gold bracelet links. The third watch has a copper dial and flange, along with gold bracelet links. All carry TAG Heuer’s Calibre 7 automatic movement.
