If you were underwhelmed by the first two MoonSwatch launches of 2022, prepare for further disappointment.
Today’s worldwide introduction of the same Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon watch features the same MoonShine gold-coloured hand that first appeared in April, but this time it has also been printed with pictures of Swiss lanterns.
The lanterns are associated with Swiss National Day, which is celebrated on August 1.
Today’s MoonSwatch drop will only be on sale for one day, which Swatch will hope generates the sort of crowd scenes associated with the original launch last year.
On that occasion, only a handful of Swatch stores had the new collection on sale, but this time there are 97 points of sale in 85 cities taking part.
Depictions of Swiss lanterns is a slight departure from previous MoonSwatch launches, which have been timed to drop on full moon days.
The first piece with a MoonShine gold chronograph hand appeared on the day of the full pink moon (there is a pinkness to Omega’s MoonShine gold).
Next, in the first week of July, the new Strawberry moon was marked with the golden chronograph hand being printed with strawberries.
The August new moon is sometimes called the Sturgeon Moon, something to do with it being a peak month for the caviar-carrying fish in North America.
Instead of depicting giant ugly fish on the golden hand, Swatch instead switched to the Swiss National Day symbol.
Limited editions of the MoonSwatch have continued to attract interest from collectors and flippers.
On the secondary market, the strawberry edition is selling for around £350, more than £100 higher than its retail price.
Versions of the 11 original MoonSwatches, which launched last year, have been selling for closer to their £228 retail price on sites like eBay.
