Roger Dubuis builds Orbis in Machina around central tourbillon

Roger Dubuis’ Poinçon de Genève-certified Orbis in Machina redefines tourbillon design and craftsmanship.

In the realm of luxury watchmaking, few names evoke the spirit of innovation and extravagance quite like Roger Dubuis.

Since its inception in 1995, the Maison has been synonymous with bold design and a relentless pursuit of pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship.

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, Roger Dubuis once again took centre stage with the unveiling of its latest masterpiece: the Orbis in Machina.

This stunning timepiece is a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to excellence and its ability to seamlessly blend heritage with cutting-edge technology.

The Orbis in Machina is more than a simple timepiece; it’s a celebration of contrasts and a fusion of old-world charm with modern engineering. Its name, which translates to “Circle in the Machine”, pays homage to the mesmerising motion of the tourbillon and the circular display of the watch.

Central to this creation is the innovative Central Tourbillon Calibre RD115, a marvel of precision engineering comprising 283 components and 29 rubies. This manual-winding movement not only showcases Roger Dubuis’ mastery of tourbillon mechanics but also demonstrates the Maison’s pursuit of innovation.

One of the most striking features of the watch is the unusual placement of the tourbillon, which allows for a unique interpretation of design. Unlike traditional tourbillon watches, where the mechanism is often positioned at the 7 o’clock position, the Orbis in Machina places it front and centre, creating a captivating visual spectacle.

The design of the watch is a study in contrasts, with concentric circles in pink gold and anthracite grey indicating the seconds, minutes, and hours. This intricate detailing, combined with open-worked flying hands and multi-levelled decoration, showcases the Maison’s unparalleled craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Turning the watch over reveals a glimpse into the intricate inner workings of the timepiece via the exhibition caseback. Precise hand finishing, showcasing 19 different techniques, and elaborate detailing pay homage to Geneva’s rich horological heritage, helping to earn the Orbis in Machina the prestigious Poinçon de Genève certification.

A 45mm pink-gold case is topped with a bezel in the same material, and is perfectly matched with a black leather strap.

In a world where luxury is often defined by exclusivity and innovation, the Orbis in Machina stands as a testament to Roger Dubuis’ enduring legacy as a Maison that dares to defy convention and create timepieces that are truly extraordinary.

As is often the case with Roger Dubuis, only 88 examples will be made, making the watch a true collector’s model.
