Police release three men arrested following fatal incident at Mappin & Webb and Rolex boutique in York

The family of a man who died during an incident at Mappin & Webb in York have described him as “a gentle giant who was kind and generous and loved by all who met him”.

Details of what happened at the jeweller have been confused, and police have not said why three men were arrested after the incident on July 26, during which Samuel Diatta, 39, lost his life.

All three men have been interviewed and released on bail pending the results of police and medical investigations, North Yorkshire Police have said.

Senior investigating office detective inspector Steve Menzies described what happened as “a very tragic incident”.

He has urged people not to speculate what took place at the Watches of Switzerland Group-owned showroom.

“I am aware that there has been some incorrect reporting as to what has happened, which is distressing for the family. We ask that people do not speculate or spread incorrect information,” DI Menzies says.

“However, it is important that we speak to anyone who has witnessed this incident or saw Mr Diatta immediately before the incident.”

Mr Diatta’s family, who originate from Senigal, describe their son as a devout Christian and sports fan. They add that in his later teenage years he developed mental health issues that stayed with him throughout his life.

“Sam was a wonderful member of our family who will be greatly missed by us, his friends and family around the world,” the family shared.
