Omega Ed White sets new auction record for Fellows

November auction saw bidders drive the price up of the steel watch to three times its pre-sale estimate and almost double what a similar watch sold for earlier this year.

Vintage Omega timepieces are continuing to grow in popularity. The latest evidence comews from Fellows, which holds specialist watch auctions every month in the UK and online, and just smashed its own record for a Omega Ed White Speedmaster with a price of £17,864.

The Speedmaster is named after the astronaut Ed White, who wore one of the chronograph bracelet watches on his historic spacewalk when he became the first American to walk in space in 1965.

The Fellows auction saw bidders drive the price up of the steel watch to three times its pre-sale estimate and almost double what a similar watch sold for earlier this year.

Fellows sold an Omega Ed White in January for a full price of £9,697 (including fees), and another in July for £11,101.

“We were so excited to have another Ed White in the final Watch Sale of the year. Having seen them sell so well in the January and July auctions we couldn’t wait to see how this example did. It was by far the cleanest and most pristine example we have ever seen and the full price realized definitely reflects this,” said Steven Yambo, senior watch specialist at Fellows Auctioneers.
