New moon rises over Christopher Ward C1 Moonphase

C1 Moonphase has an oversized moon illuminating a dark blue aventurine glass dial with flecks of copper oxide that look like stars in a night sky.

The moon has been a constant source of fascination for Christopher Ward, and oversized moonphases indicators have found their way onto a number of watches including the 2015 C9 Moonphase and 2019 C1 Moonglow.

Now the British watchmaker has gone even bigger with a new C1 Moonphase where the complication is 25% bigger than the already bold version on the Moonglow and illuminates a dark blue aventurine glass dial with flecks of copper oxide that look like stars in a night sky.

The collection was launched at a planetarium in Greenwich, London, last night.

Two subtlety three-dimensional depictions of the moon rotate on their own aventurine disc and are made to glow a soft white under darkness by Globolight, a ceramic and SuperLumiNova composite.

There are no other distractions on the dial; no hour markers and no sign of a Christopher Ward logo, just a small Swiss Made stamp at 6 o’clock.

Under the hood, and visible via an exhibition case back, Christopher Ward has chosen its modular in-house JJ04 automatic movement to power the watch, which will show the phases of the moon accurately for 128 years if permanently wound.

The 40.5mm watch can be worn on Christopher Ward’s The Consort bracelet, which has over 200 components and lights up with a combination of brushed and polished finishes.

There is also the option of leather straps.

The C1 Moonphase is on sale at Christopher Ward’s website from today for £2,120 on a bracelet and £1,995 on a leather strap.
