Native WhatsApp for watches will make debut this year

Messaging app will work in isolation, but will also sync with all other devices running the same WhatsApp account.

Smartwatch wearers will already be receiving and sending WhatsApp notifications from their wrists, but an all new app will allow people to stay in touch with their messages even when they do not have their phone.

Today, WhatsApp works by mirroring what is happening on a smartphone with a connected smartwatch.

Later this year, according to reports by technology media, the same functionality will be available when the wristwatch is out of range from its tethered phone, meaning voice notes, images and text messages can be shared.

There is already a beta version of the app available (update 2.23.10.10), which is available to beta testers from Google Play Store.

The app will work in isolation, but will also sync with all other devices running the same WhatsApp account.
