Germany’s Junghans likes to stick closely to its historic Bauhaus design principles, but that does not mean the watchmaker is standing still.
Take today’s new max bill Mega Solar, for example, which has the mid-century minimalist style, but also houses a radio antenna to connect to a smartphone app and its bright white dial is also slightly translucent and has hidden solar charging cells behind it.
The app ensures the watch is always kept accurate by synching with a digital source, and it keeps the date correct through short months and leap years, effectively making it a perpetual calendar.
Junghans has worked hard to ensure the watch is not power-hungry, so it will keep working for up to three years, even if it never sees the light of day to recharge in that time.
Another modern feature is the use of an environmentally sensitive strap in red or grey made from recycled apple and vegan microfibre.
There are two versions of the 38mm watch, one in plain steel, the other golden.
