Japan’s Minase toughens all-black Horizon GEN with diamond-like carbon

GEN is spelled with the kanji character "玄", which offers several meanings such as depth, darkness, mystery or the color black.

Japanese watchmaker Minase hand-produces around 500 timepieces per year at its Akita workshop using Swiss mechanical movements in watches that embody the values, traditions and typical crafts of its native country.

The business is owned by Kyowa, a supplier of high-end components active in the global watchmaking industry since 1963.

Minase’s latest launch is a limited edition version of its Horizon watch in black DLC.

The Horizon GEN DLC watch is virtually scratch-proof thanks to its black coating combined with a treatment that reflects the light in different ways from polished and brushed surfaces.

Minase says the watch is inspired by the horizon line stretching over the sea and designed with pure, simple lines evoking the calm of the ocean with the strength of a Samurai’s sword.

An ETA 2892-2 automatic movement with a customized rotor is visible from the underside of the watch.

Only 25 are being produced. They are on sale now for $4,700.
