Garmin International Inc., the Swiss-based arm of Garmin Ltd. that makes its smartwatches, has unveiled inReach Messenger technology that can send an emergency rescue message to dedicated call handlers, even from outside an area with cell phone coverage.

inReach Messenger is designed for pilots, sailors and adventurers, and is capable of two-way texting and group messaging over wifi, cellular or satellite communications.

In the event of an emergency, inReach Messenger and Messenger App2 can send an SOS message to the Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC), which is staffed around the clock, 365 days per year.

“Garmin inReach devices are trusted by hundreds of thousands of users globally for communication and peace of mind. The new inReach Messenger is no exception, but with its multiple communication networks, ease-of-use, and smartphone compatibility, it is a perfect device for those who want to easily keep in touch when outside of cell coverage,” says Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales.

IERCC can communicate with the inReach Messenger user and search and rescue organisations.

inReach Messenger is a standalone device, priced at £250, but can be paired with more than 80 compatible Garmin gadgets including smartwatches, handhelds, navigators and more.

Once paired, users can send and receive messages, share their location, receive smart notifications, and declare an SOS from devices like a smartwatch.
