Charles Girardier has created a second style of animated dial for its Magic 8 collection, which launches in Geneva this week at the Time to Watches show.
The watchmaker made waves in 2020 when its 1809 watch scooped the GPHG award for a Ladies Complication timepiece thanks to the ingenious way its logo is deconstructed and reconstructed on the dial as time passes through the day.
Magic 8 watches pull off the same trick, this time with the figure 8 on an infinite loop on a minimalist dial in either green or blue.
The figure 8 was chosen as it is a symbol for cultures across the world that is synonymous with luck, happiness, prosperity and positive vibes.
It takes one minute for the 8 to break apart and come together again, giving the watch added interest as the two sections of the figure rotate in opposite directions.
The Magic 8 watch comes in a 41mm titanium case.
Its dial is created using a grand feu enamelling technique known as en camaïeu where a convex silver plate is used as a base for applying several layers of enamel.
Each one of these layers is vitrified in a kiln fired at over 800C. As the dial is cambered along its edge, the depth of enamel varies between the centre and the periphery, which creates variations in colour from the outside of the dial inward.
Under the dial is Charles Giardier’s decorated CG8080 automatic movement with 42 hour power reserve.
The watch is priced at CHF 38,800, excluding VAT.
