Aerospace company moves into watch materials

A company that has developed materials for the aerospace industry for the past 35 years has launched an offshoot company dedicated to creating lightweight super-strength materials for watch design.

LuxeFoil – an offshoot of Luxel, which has supplied companies such as Nasa with materials – will make its debut at BaselWorld with a selection of more than 20 innovative and colourful materials, including some used in some satellites that are 500 times thinner than human hair.

The patent-pending proprietary fabrication process at LuxeFoil delivers extremely lightweight but highly durable metals that can be used in a variety of ways in watch design. Materials include gold, silver, sillicon, boron, zirconium and vanadium.

LuxeFoil president Travis Ayers said: “LuxeFoil offers luxury brands a powerful combination of technologically advanced and breathtakingly beautiful materials that differentiate them from the competition and deliver up a competitive advantage.

“The luxury watch and jewellery market already values precision, rarity and unique items. They also value craftsmanship and reliability. Those are all the things that are the heart of Luxel’s corporate culture and have been for 40 years. So it seemed like a natural place to start with LuxeFoil and take that into new markets.”
