Seiko releases Speedtimer chronograph for World Athletics Championships in Oregon

The watch has a black dial, textured like a running track. Its chronograph second hand and 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock are in yellow, the color of all Seiko’s timing and measurement devices.

There has been a lot of focus — and commercial success — for Seiko’s Prospex dive watch family in recent years as the fashion for steel sports watches played to the brand’s strengths.

Just as sporty, and with equally strong heritage, are Seiko’s chronographs, which will be front and centre at this summer’s World Athletics Championships, taking place in Eugene, Oregon.

Seiko’s reputation as a pioneer in sports timing was established in the 1960s, particularly at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo where it provided timing devices; catapulting the business onto the world stage.

Since 1985, Seiko has been the timekeeper for World Athletics and, in 2022, the brand will deliver state-of-the-art timing services to the World Athletics Championships.

As part of that project, Seiko is releasing a Prospex Speedtimer Limited Edition Chronograph with a production run of just 400.

It goes on sale in June at the Seiko boutiques Seikoboutique.co.uk for £2,740.

It is powered by Seiko’s Caliber 8R46, Automatic Chronograph movement, which is displayed through an exhibition case back featuring the Oregon 22 World Athletics Championship branding.

The 42.5mm timepiece can be worn on a leather strap or steel bracelet.
