Richard Mille sets sail with its own cross-Channel vintage yacht race and regatta

Watchmaker is drawing on the significance of the English Channel’s place in history with the launch of a brand new yacht race from Falmouth to Le Havre featuring 15 vessels dating from the late 1800s to the 1930s.

Crossing the English Channel has created some of the most important moments in European history.

William the Conqueror made it to England in 1066, Louis Blériot flew across the strait in 1909 and the allies began the liberation of occupied France on Day Day in 1944.

Richard Mille is drawing on the significance of the Channel’s place in history with the launch of a brand new yacht race from Falmouth to Le Havre.

Crowds will be treated to the sight of 15 vessels dating from the late 1800s to the 1930s, which will compete in Schooner and Cutter categories.

A trophy, which may be fought over for decades to come, has been made by historic London jeweller Garrard.

“Classic yachts bear a living, breathing testimony to the highest values of workmanship, heritage and tradition passed on to us through centuries. By creating this challenge, we aim to set sail through history and to bring this high-end craft very much back to life,” says Richard Mille.

A fortnight-long regatta will take place from June 10 to 25, with the aim of becoming one of the world’s greatest gatherings of aficionados and collectors of historical yachts.

Races will take place between Falmouth and Le Havre, with stopovers in renowned sailing landmarks Dartmouth and Cowes in a series of inshore and offshore races.

“The Richard Mille Cup strives to recapture the spirit of the pre-war British racing circuit. We see these yachts as important cultural artefacts,” explains organiser William Collier.
