Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch drop met with incredulity and sarcasm

Swapping a plastic seconds hand for one made of Omega’s trademarked Moonshine Gold has not set the Twittersphere alight.

“This was quite easily one of the most anticlimactic drops I’ve ever seen. Y’all could have done a new colorway or anything inventive but nope,” scoffed watchthesecondhand moments after the new Swatch MoonSwatch with a seconds hand made from Omega’s Moonshine Gold was launched in Japan.

“WTH !!! Just?” questioned 3ljabri.

It is fair to say that punters watching Swatch go live on its Instagram with images of its latest MoonSwatch were underwhelmed.

No price has been published by Swatch.

The company’s Instagram post simply reads:

“This Mission to the Moon has a seconds hand made of OMEGA’s Moonshine™ Gold. This special seconds hand has been produced exclusively during the full moon of February, as stated in the certificate that comes with the watch. It is available for purchase in very special places in Zurich, London, Milan and Tokyo on March 7th, and in other locations during the next full moon. It is not limited and not available online. The Mission to the Moon with a special seconds hand is not going to replace the Mission to the Moon”.

Minutes after the new watch was revealed in Japan, the general mood among potential customers might best be summed up by kevj_p, who remarks: “No way we waited for a new release and all we get is a golden chrono hand. Y’all are actually taking the piss here”.

For a more reasoned view, who better than the founder of Frattello and Omega Speedmaster collectors club Speedy Tuesday, Robert-Jan Broer, who appears to have had advanced information and images for his news piece about today’s launch.

In his article, he suggests that opinions on the new Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch come down to one thing: “Either you like a watch or you don’t, and I do like this new Omega × Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon iteration,” Mr Broer says.

“The fact that Swatch produced the Moonshine Gold-coated hands on the day of February’s full moon is a nice angle to underline the use of this special Moonshine Gold alloy,” he concludes.
