Hugh Rice wins architecture award

The Hugh Rice Group has won an award for architectural design, which recognises the investment it has made in its stores.

Seven months ago, the eight-store retailer relocated its Beverley town centre store independent, which is part of overall efforts to continue to improve its stores throughout 2012.

This included extending its flagship store at St Stephen’s in Hull to a 5,000sq foot floor space and creating the new store within a 17th Century Grade II listed building at the heart of the conservation town of Beverley.

Renovated and restored to retain the character of the historic East Yorkshire town, the store has now won Built Heritage development of the year in the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairman’s Awards for architectural excellence. The award was delivered at a glamorous ceremony at the Spa in Bridlington on May 7.

Hugh Rice Group director Mike Rice said: “So much planning, attention to detail and hard work went into making the Beverley store a very special place for our customers. It’s a great boost for the team to see our combined efforts being recognised as on the East Riding of Yorkshire’s finest developments.”

Mike Rice also said that the new Beverley store had led to a 43% increase in turnover, when compared with the previous location.

Hugh Rice Jewellers, founded in Hull in 1971, now has eight stores throughout Yorkshire.
