48 years on from man-kind’s first steps on the moon, the watch industry is also celebrating a monumental achievement, the first watch on the moon.
July 20 marks the 48th anniversary of the first human steps on the lunar surface, taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in 1969. It was in this moment, the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch became the first watch worn on the moon.
2017 also marks the 60th Anniversary of the brand’s Speedmaster collection. A NASA standard for all lunar missions, the Speedmaster has endured the test of time; witnessing events that have tested the limits of physical endurance and human courage from NASA to the wrists of Hollywood’s elite.
Earlier this year Omega announced it is looking to capitalise on the 60th milestone of three of its famous lines with the launch of three new anniversary pieces.
A modern take on three classics, the Seamaster 300, Railmaster and Speedmaster, hopes to make the most of the attention surrounding the pieces this year, backed by a major marketing campaign. All three pieces are encased in brushed and polished stainless steel and feature a black ‘tropical’ dial, with vintage indexes filled with Super-LumiNova. Each timepiece is limited to 3,557 pieces and is presented in a special presentation box.
