It would not be a curation of rare complications without Patek Philippe heading the bill, but Bonhams has cast its search wider for Switzerland’s most sophisticated timekeepers for its Fine Watches sale on August 5 where Vacheron Constantin and Rolex will fight for attention.
“We are very excited for this sale as it features a wide selection of ultra-desirable watches with rare and exceptional complications. Many of the watches offered are rarely seen at auction, and all are highly sought after by collectors. A number of the watches in this sale are truly a testament to the elevation of watchmaking into a striking art form – small yet powerful devices, which do amazing things,” says Jonathan Darracott, global head of Bonhams Watch Department.
Extremely complex minute repeaters and perpetual calendars are sold alongside watches with lesser ambitions, but Bonhams points out that a watch’s complication refers to any feature in a mechanical timepiece beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds.
That allows a rare Rolex Day-Date in gold to be sold alongside a 40th Anniversary Patek Philippe Nautilus.
Star of the auction is a rare Patek Philippe perpetual calendar with moon phase, day/night and leap year indication.
