WOTY 2014: De Bethune DB29 Maxichrono Tourbillon

Highly Commended. Innovative Watches of the Year 2014.

This is a watch that has it all. Seven years of research and development were necessary to create the mechanics of this tourbillon-equiped, monopusher chronograph achieved using concentric scales and five centrally mounted hands rather than separate sub-dials.

If that were not enough the chronograph records elapsed time for an impressive 24 hours and the silicone and titanium 30-second tourbillon is one of the fastest and lightest in horology.

These astonishing mechanics can be revealed by activating the pusher at 4 o’clock, which unlocks a gold double caseback mounted on invisible hinges. The five central hands are governed by three different clutches, themselves controlled by no fewer than three column wheels.
