Unique Jacob & Co watch sells for $750,000 at Leonardo DiCaprio charity auction

A customised Jacob & Co. Astronomia Sky has sold for more than $750,000 at a charity auction organised to raise money for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

The normal price for the limited edition watch is a cool $580,000, so the unnamed buyer at the star-studded charity auction paid a significant premium for the unique piece.

The watch was designed and made after executives from the Hollywood actor’s team contacted Jacob & Co with an idea to create a one-off piece for the fundraiser.

The resulting piece is transcribed with the Foundation’s mission statement: “Generosity is the key to the future of our planet.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation uses collaborative partnerships to support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction.

The Astronomia Sky watch, which was first seen at a Geneva presentation in January this year, is a three-dimensional triple axis tourbillon watch with a celestial dial lying beneath an oval sky of rotating stars.

The aim of the watch, according to Jacob Arabo, founder of Jacob & Co, is to take the celestial display so integral to seafarers, astronomers and ancient horologers, and placing it on a wrist.

The technical specification describes a 47mm 18ct gold timepiece with Sidereal Display with an Oval Sky Indicator of the Celestial Panorama; Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon; Day / Night Indicator; Hours and Minutes Subdial and Orbital Second Hand; “Jacob Cut” Red MoonOrange Sapphire with 288 facets.

Only 18 are being made.
