HOT 100 AMERICAN TRAILBLAZERS: Danny Goldsmith — Goldsmith & Complications

Everybody in the WATCHPRO Hot 100 started somewhere, and Danny Goldsmith reminds us that blood, sweat, tears and great connections are vital in the early years of a new venture.

Everybody in the WATCHPRO Hot 100 started somewhere, and Danny Goldsmith reminds us that blood, sweat, tears and great connections are vital in the early years of a new venture.

Goldsmith & Complications opened in Delray Beach, Florida, last year after Danny decided to leave Manhattan for a less frenetic life with ocean views.

He had been a leading sales consultant with New York jeweler Cellini for several years, and had fallen in love with the artisan independent watchmakers his mentor and boss Leon Adams introduced him to.

“Leon offered me a job in 2017,” he remembers.

“For the first year and a half, Leon had me out the back doing inventory and buying, which gave me a greater appreciation for a lot more brands that I did not know much about or didn’t like. In early 2019, I was put on the sales floor and never allowed into the back room again.”

Wishing to do something different with his own Delray Beach boutique, Danny teamed up with close friend Samir Shah, president of art outfit Berd Vay’e that combines horology and contemporary art to create sculptures filled with watch components, and Chicago Cubs switch hitter Ian Happ.

This unlikely trio came up with the idea of creating a special baseball bat-shaped sculpture filled with glittering cogs and wheels, limited to 30 pieces, that would only be available through the new boutique.

Danny’s vision to bring together these different worlds is a first for Delary Beach.

“There is nobody else doing what I am going to do in the area,” he says.

“I am going to have watches in vitrines near the couches and showpieces on the walls. I am going to have a strap bar for Jean Rousseau so people can customize their watches. I am going to heavily invest in Berd Vay’e. But for the main part it will be presentations of independent watch brands alongside a few larger brands like Bell & Ross and Zenith.”
