HIGHLY COMMENDED: Mechanical Watches of the Year, NOMOS Glashütte Minimatik

The in-house built calibre DUW 3001 is the star of the NOMOS Glashütte Minimatik because its height of just 3.2mm and width of 28.8mm allows for the creation of a timepiece of perfect minimalist proportions.

The movement, designed by Theodor Prenzel, is incredibly thin and exactly made, losing less than 6% of its energy to friction so that it runs longer, while the NOMOS swing system in-house escapement regulates the automatic movement to chronograph accuracy.

You can see the movement through a sapphire case back, but from the front all the German engineering is concealed behind a bright, silver-plated, white dial with red hour, minute and second hands.

Tiny minute markers of blue and gold all but disappear between larger grey numbers, quirkily displaying the hours of 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12.

The watch has won several awards for design this year, including a gong from the respected German Design Council.
