Zenith sparks-up a Cuban with Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to Cohiba

Luxury watches and fine cigars have always been comfortable companions, but Zenith is taking the relationship to a new level with the Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to Cohiba timepiece.

Cohiba is one of the premium brands of Corporación Habanos, Cuba’s world leading maker of cigars.

The cigar brand’s enthusiasts may recognise the lustre and texture of a tobacco leaf in the Zenith timepiece’s amber-coloured dial.

The dial is actually crafted in gold, but engraved by hand to replicate the texture and feel of a tobacco leaf.

The Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to Cohiba movement combines two mechanisms to improve precision. One is a regulating organ with high-frequency oscillations (5 Hz) enabling tenth of a second time sequencing. The other is a patented Gravity Control gyroscopic module which neutralises the effects of gravity on the watch operation.

Housed in a case with a water resistance of up to 30 metres and equipped with a total of 308 components – 171 of which are used for the gyroscopic module – the hand-wound El Primero 8804 calibre features off-centred hours and minutes functions, small seconds, a self-regulating Gravity Control module and a power reserve indicator boasting an autonomy of more than 50 hours.
