Zenith makes limited edition watches for each of five Extreme E electric rally races this year

Ultra-rugged limited editions embrace the sustainability mission of the Extreme E project by using various upcycled elements scavenged from the first season’s races.

Extreme E launched last year as an off-road series using all-electric SUVs in races in spectacular and challenging parts of the world such as the Saudi Arabian desert and the Arctic.

Each race aims to raise awareness for the impact of climate change in the country and provides social and environmental support for those locations.

Zenith signed as the Official Timekeeper and Founding Partner of the series in 2021 and is building on its association this year with the launch of five limited edition Defy Extreme Carbon chronographs; one for each of the 2022 Extreme E races.

First up, for the season-opening Desert X Prix in the emerging Saudi Arabian city of NEOM, comes the Defy Extreme E “Desert X Prix” chronograph.

The ultra-rugged limited edition of 20 pieces embraces the sustainability mission of the Extreme E project by using various upcycled elements scavenged from the first season’s races.

The case’s lid coating is made from E-grip recycled tyres, while the plate covering is made from parts of an Extreme E racing tarpaulin.

Its case, crown and pushers are made from light and tough carbon fibre and its twelve-sided bezel is made in microblasted titanium.

In an environment where split seconds count, Zenith has installed the El Primero 9004 automatic movement with its 1/100th of a second chronograph.

It comes on a rubber strap with yellow cordura effect made from recycled tyres. This can be swapped for black rubber or black velcro straps.

The DEFY Extreme E “Desert X Prix” will make its debut at the Extreme E Desert X race in Neom on February 19-20.

It can be pre-ordered from today from Zenith’s physical and online boutiques for £22,700.
