WOTY2013: Swatch Scuba Libre

Earlier this year WatchPro unveiled its Watches of the Year 2013, made up of 10 winning timepieces and 90 highly commended watches that we felt boasted commercial appeal, innovation and had wowed consumers and retailers alike over the past 12 months.

Highly commended for the WatchPro Trendsetting Watch of the Year 2013 was the Swatch Scuba Libre.

This summer, Swatch invested a lot of energy marketing the launch of its Scuba Libre range of nine colourful divers’ watches.

Wrapping an ad around a London Underground Central Line train ensured the watches were visible on the high street.

The brand no doubt recognised the relevance of the watch to the general fashion-loving public. As divers’ watches become more prolific, the Scuba Libre watches are brilliantly placed as both the fun, fashionable watches that consumers expect from Swatch but teamed with water sports’ watch functions.

Each is water resistant to 20 bar and has a rotating bezel and silicone strap, while the indicators are bold for underwater visibility. This practicality, however, has not led to the brand holding back on the fashion appeal of the models, which are drenched in colour.

We particularly enjoy the versions with the clear dials that reveal a brightly coloured movement, which have playfully been given names such as Chlorofish, Cuttlefish and Clownfish.

This is yet another example of a brand creating trends of its own and securing high commendations as a trendsetter on the high street – something Swatch has been doing now for 30 years.
