WOTY 2013: Nomos Glashütte Ahoi Datum

When we first beheld the Nomos Glashütte Ahoi models at BaselWorld 2013 it was love at first sight – a quirky sporty offer for people who are not looking for all singing, all dancing traditional sports watches and the unwanted heft that all that functionality can bring with it.

Nomos Glashütte told us it has steered clear of the water sports category clichés and instead focused on creating a robust and water resistant watch (to 200m), without compromising on style. It has done exactly that, delivering on its signature clean style in spades with the additional winning pops of blue and reds on the hands.

The Nomos Glashütte Ahoi Datum stands out as a favourite. Driven by the Zeta movement, an in-house built automatic calibre with patented date function and a stop-seconds mechanism, the watch has an extra-large date at 6 o’clock that adds not only to the watch’s functionality but its appearance too, as does the view through the sapphire crystal glass back, where the mechanics can be admired.

Under the bonnet, the calibre is enhanced further by polish detailing – the Glashütte sunburst, ribbing and Nomos perlage. The option of the waterproof textile strap is a final touch that makes this watch hard to say no to.
