WOTY 2012: Nomos Glashütte Zürich Blaugold

Earlier this year WatchPro unveiled its Watches of the Year 2012 – the 10 winning timepieces and 90 highly commended watches that we felt boasted commercial appeal, innovation and had wowed consumers and retailers alike over the past 12 months.

Highly commended for WatchPro Rising Star of the Year 2012 was the Nomos Glashütte Zürich Blaugold.

Here at WatchPro we’ve admired Nomos Glashütte for several years but the brand remains relatively niche in the UK, despite offering outstanding design, quality and value.

Its German-made watches, still produced by a small manufactory team in the famous watchmaking town of Glashütte, retail for less than £4,000 and all are mechanical.

We adore the brand for its tongue-in-cheek presentation: it knows it creates excellent watches, but it also has a sense of humour and aims to be the watch for the everyday man and woman.

This year it launched two new Zürich timepieces, including the Yves Klein-inspired Blaugold. It boasts Glashütte’s sunray decoration — a polishing style used by watchmakers in the Ore Mountains — and has an elegant steel case, slender bezel and, like all Nomos watches, an easily readable, unadorned dial.

The Blaugold and Nomos were a natural choice for this year’s Rising Stars section and we know there will be plenty more quality watchmaking from this German gem.
