Womens Watch of the Year 2015

WatchPro Women’s Watch of the Year 2015

The perennial question in the field of women’s watches once again raises its head, namely are female consumers interested in mechanical horology or does the convenience of quartz curry favour? Our selection of watches includes a healthy dose of both.

WINNER: Bulgari Lvcea

There is something truly captivating about the segmented metal bracelets that secure Bulgari’s Lvcea collection to the wrist. For one they are exquisitely crafted and perfectly polished, no doubt a reflection on the Italian brand’s jewellery expertise.

There is also something intriguing about the serpentine way the segments interlink, eternally decreasing in width only to then be replaced by another link. It is also worth noting that we don’t often begin writing about a watch by describing its bracelet, which serves to illustrate how important the bimetal links are to the overall design of the Lucea, with the 18ct pink gold accents subtly playing with the light to accentuate the gentle curves of the links.

The watch head itself is further testament to the sense of balance and proportion introduced by Bulgari’s designers, perfectly circular and outlined by a pink gold bezel which rises at the three o’clock position to reflect the outline of the synthetic conrundum, diamond-tipped crown. Mother of pearl is used on the diamond-set dial, perhaps to soften a watch that places such import elsewhere on its metal finishes.

The coup de grace however is Bulgari’s choice of hands for the Lucea. How easy would it have been to go for poker-straight, wafer-thin hands in a bid not to clutter the dial? But again the brand’s exceptional judgment triumphed, opting instead for bold sword hands embuing the watch a sense of fiery defiance.
