WINNER: HUGH RICE
Hugh Rice is the only independent retailer in the St Stephens shopping centre in Hull. It is unusual for indies to opt for mall locations, but the investment has transformed the business of the company, according to its managing director Paul Rice.
Outside of the city of Hull, Hugh Rice has a two-storey shop in the affluent market town of Harrogate and two more in the equally upmarket Beverley in East Yorkshire.
The two Beverley shops target different customers. The original Hugh Rice boutique focuses on bridal jewellery and upmarket watch brands including TAG Heuer, while Hugh Rice LUXE aims to offer the town more of an affordable fashion fix with brands including Olivia Burton. Additional stores under both brands are planned in the coming years, potentially moving Hugh Rice up a weight band to multiple watch retailer in future Awards.
