UK watch sales up 11.5% in February

UK watch sales were up 11.5% year on year in February in terms of value with the top end of the market and men’s watches delivering the strongest growth.

According to data compiled by retail analyst GfK it was the top end of the market that performed best in the UK in February with watches priced at £1,000 or more delivering 20.07% growth on the same month in 2012.

This was followed by sales of watches priced between £100 and £500, which were up 11.7%, and watches priced at between £500 and £1,000, which were up 0.51%.

The lower end of the market delivered the only negative performance of the price brackets with sales of watches priced at £100 or less down 5.65%.

In the battle of the sexes, men’s watches outperformed women’s with sales up 16.48% in value versus sales up 5.32%.

Sales of unisex watches dropped 17.13% while children’s watches delivered sales growth of 0.68%.

Ceramic watches had a tough month compared with 2012, with sales values dropping 27.3%. Both leather strap and metal strap watches delivered a positive performance with sales up 26.7% and 10.3% respectively.
