Two world auction records broken at Christie’s with Patek Philippe taking the top lot

An Evening of Exceptional Watches at Christie’s New York brought in more than £4.5m.

Two world auction records were broken at An Evening of Exceptional Watches, which took place at Christie’s in New York last Thursday..

The auction brought in a total of £4,612,349 ($5,861,125) with the top lot, a Patek Philippe reference 3448 (pictured above) in white gold with bracelet, selling for £919,041 ($1,155,000.)

This sale established the world auction record for the regular production of this reference at auction.

The other record breaking item at the event was a Vacheron Constantin reference 4261 in 18k gold, which sold for £280,386 ($356,250), setting the world auction record for a ref. 4261 in gold.

Other highlights included a very rare Rolex Daytona with “Paul Newman” dial, retailed by Linz Brothers, Dallas, 1968 that realised £245,942 ($312,500); and a Patek Philippe reference 1463 stainless steel chronograph wristwatch with bracelet, retailed by Gübelin, that realised £332,908 ($423,000).

The Christie’s Watches Online: Travel with Time Sale continues through June 25 and presents 236 watches ranging from vintage to contemporary timepieces.
