Tissot wins dispute over Russian domain name

Tissot has triumphed in the Russian courts in a trademark battle over a web domain name.

The Swatch Group-owned watch brand had taken a company called Holmrook Limited to court after it registered the website tissot.ru.

Tissot argued that this prevented it from posting information about the brand and its products under its registered Tissot trademark with a .ru Russian domain, and the Supreme Commercial Court agreed.

The tissot.ru website under Holmrook Limited’s control was a site dedicated to French painter Jacques Tissot, although the watch brand claims that this was only created after it filed its first law suit on the matter.

The tissot.ru web address now redirects to Tissot’s main tissot.ch website.

This court case has been rumbling on for some time with lower courts ruling in favour of Tissot but Holmrook Limited has issued appeals.

Tissot was registered by the watchmaker as a trademark in 1917.
