Tissot is following up on the launch earlier this year of a quartz revival of its steel on steel PRX with a mechanical PRX Powermatic 80.

Both adopt the original Tissot design from 1978 and are virtually identical.

While the quartz version retails at £295, the automatics are priced at £565 to £590.

For that, you get the reliability of the Powermatic 80 movement, a modified ETA 2824 with a Nivachron hairspring and 80 hour power reserve.

Tissot is making a big deal about this being a watch that captures the buzz, soul and electronic beats of the late seventies, but the styling is not exactly disco.

It does faithfully adhere to the mainstream watch trends of the time, albeit in a mechanical watch on this occasion.

Integrated steel bracelets were all the rage, and everyman needed a clean and simple timepiece to slide comfortably under his statement shirt cuffs from day into night[club].

There are four styles of the slim 40mm Tissot PRX Powermatic with blue, brown, black or silver embossed dials. The silver and brown dialed pieces have gold hands, hour markers and bezel.

They go on sale this autumn.
