Thomas Mercer to collaborate on Brittanica

Thomas Mercer is collaborating with a British furniture designer to bring its marine chronometers back into the home.

The chronometer specialist, founded in 1858, is working with London-based Jake Phipps to create a new table chronometer.

Alessandro Quintavalle, Thomas Mercer’s chief executive officer, said: “It is widely acknowledged how the Thomas Mercer name is intrinsically linked with the most emblematic form of precision chronometer, namely the marine; however, in its long history, the brand proved its excellence in virtually every form of chronometry, ranging from table to aviation to pocket. The highest form of authenticity Thomas Mercer can achieve is by keeping its heritage relevant in the contemporary world, therefore the collaboration with Jake Phipps is pivotal in the re-launch of our table chronometer range.

“As designer of some of the finest furniture in the world, we are truly delighted to welcome his creativity to enrich the universe of our new timekeeper. We are eagerly anticipating this unique association and we are confident that the values of modernity, high aesthetics and the quest for excellence that we both share will culminate in a quintessentially British masterpiece.”

The Brittanica, as the new table chronometer will be known when it is officially launched in September, will feature distinctive octagonal shapes running throughout the case, the base and the dial, via an aperture of which the brand’s signature spring detent escapement will be visible. A completely new TM0802 calibre will be used inside the piece.
