Swiss watch industry starts hiring again as sales rise

The number of watchmaking companies in Switzerland has also increased from 672 to 694.

Switzerland’s watch industry grew its total workforce last year, the first time payroll has risen in four years. The Swiss Employers’ Association reports that the number of people working in the watch sector increased by 2,868 to stand at 57,812 at the end of 2018. The sector’s workforce had previous contracted by over 7% between 2014 and 2017. It comes in a year when the total value of Swiss watch exports rose by 6.3% to CHF 21.2 billion. More than 90% of the new jobs were in the production side of the watch business. There were only 187 management and administrative roles added. The number of watchmaking companies in Switzerland has also increased from 672 to 694.
