Strong bidding at quarterly Fellows watch auction

Fellows has reported strong sales at its latest quarterly vintage and modern wristwatch auction with the top lots including a diamond-set Blancpain Leman Tourbillon and a 1940s Rolex Oyster Chronograph in less than pristine condition.

There were 286 watches in the latest edition of the sale which brought in a total of £414,930 including buyers’ premiums.

The Birmingham auction house said that despite a tough economic climate bidding proved to be "intense" with a high number of bids being placed online through its website.

The top lot of the auction was a diamond-set Blancpain Leman Tourbillon that sold for more than £31,000.

Other sale highlights included a weathered 1940s Rolex Oyster Chronograph that sold for £29,000, a 45mm 1970s Heuer Calculator watch with automatic chronograph and slide rule that achieved £2,300, an 18ct gold Patek Philippe Beta 21 quartz that sold for £12,000, a gentleman’s 18ct rose gold Piaget Rectangle XL that reached £6,000 and an 18ct rose gold Vacheron Constantin Patrimony that achieved £6,500.

Fellows watch business manager Adrian Hailwood said: “When times are tough auctions can achieve great results for both buyers and sellers. Contemporary pieces can be bought at a significant saving compared to retail, while vintage watches receive the best possible exposure to achieve the maximum return for vendors."
