For the past five years, Speake-Marin has been developing and assembling its own proprietary movements at its atelier in Neuchatel, Switzerland.
This has led to the creation of a modular base SMA movement that has been built upon with a range of complications within a signature architecture and look for its One & Two openworked watches.
Visitors to WATCHPRO Salon from November 12 to 13 at The Londoner hotel on Leicester Square will see this strategy put to work across a family of One & Two watches that share a design that exposes much of the movement.
The aim is to make the movement the star of the dial, showing off sweeping bridges, decorated plates and Speake-Marin manufactured micro-rotors, small wheels, screws and jewels.
All references flowing from the SMA source are made in small quantities.
Three One & Two watches illustrate the plan perfectly.
The original One & Two Openworked watches housing the SMA01 came with central hours and minutes hands and a small seconds subdial at 1.30 on the dial.
This evolved with the SMA02 into a dual time watch.
By the time Speake-Marin reached SMA05, a tourbillon had been added in place of the small seconds.
Along the way, Speake-Marin has played with materials, finishes and colours.
Titanium and rose gold cases in 38mm or 42 mm have been offered, and the plates on the dial have been lifted with intricate decoration or bold colour choices like the mint green chosen for a new Dual Time launched earlier this year.
They are all automatics and wound by a micro rotor, and typically have power reserves in the 50 hour range.
Depending on the complications, materials and finishes, the watches sell at prices starting from under CHF 18,000, but there are models with CHF 34,000 price tags and above.
Speake-Marin at WATCHPRO Salon
Speake-Marin is one of the star brands at this year’s WATCHPRO Salon, a showcase of prestige watchmakers and a chance for brands, retailers and press to meet collectors and enthusiasts in 5-star luxury.
The two-day event takes place from November 12 to 13 at The Londoner, a brand new 5-star hotel on London’s Leicester Square.
